One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. One woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every three minutes and one woman will die of breast cancer every 13 minutes in the United States. An estimated 192,370 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in the United States during 2009, while an estimated 1,910 men will also be diagnosed. An estimated 40,170 women will die from breast cancer, as well as an esitmated 440 men.
Breast cancer is the leading cancer cited among American women and is second only to lung cancer in deaths. The most proven and significant risk factors are being female and getting older. Approximately five to ten percent of breast cancers are due to heredity.
